Who was John Date?
John Date was the only Canadian manufacturer of diving equipment. He began making diving equipment in Montreal after repairing much of the dive equipment used on the construction of the Victoria bridge around 1854-1859. He immigrated to Canada as a coppersmith, welder, brazier, gas fitter and plumber (jack of all trades as many commercial divers are). He began making helmets very similar to Siebe Gorman hats and soon became well known in the industry for producing some of the best diving equipment available.
